For those following the "make your own digital chess clock" project, I have some updates on my blog

The basic clock function is now sending the time to 2 LCD displays. I combine some custom characters to make digits that are 4 rows tall by 3 columns wide.

I agree, sounds like a great project! I'm not much of a tinkerer (I do a bit of scripting/hacking/programming at work) but I think my kids should be. I'll follow along and possibly try to build one with my kids later if it looks feasible.

We'll, yes....but getting all my inclined step ramps tuned to mark the time accurately enough -- let alone that vortex funnel -- and gathering up all those ball bearings off the venue floor after my opponent slammed it against the far wall.....just too much trouble to maintain!
