I was playing for a draw in order to finish the tournament without a loss. After we repeated a position, my opponent played a pawn break that rendered the draw less likely. Exact calculation of the pawn endgame prior to swapping the last set of rooks brought an unexpected result, second place in the tournament, and $250.

Had another comfortable win but against a tougher opponent seemed to go into an endgame fast - my favourite sort of game, I think he was struggling after his 5th move!

Nice finish. Did he realise he'd be mated when he took the knight!?

Steve - Nice crush. Games like this give Apes a bad name.

First OTB Game in ages for me - a Game/30 minutes rapidplay. Predictably I lost but most of the bad errors at the end were due to time trouble and by move 15 I had a good position I think.

Alexander Mekerov - Me

[[1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d6 9.h3 Bb7 10.d4 Re8 11.Nbd2 Bf8 12.Bc2 Nb8 13.dxe5 dxe5 14.Qe2 c5 15.a4 Qa5 16.Nf1 Nbd7 17.Ng3 Rac8 18.Nf5 Nb6? 19.Bg5 bxa4 20.Nh6+ gxh6 21.Bxf6 Bg7 22.Bxg7 Kxg7 23.Nh4 Rc6 24.Qh5 Bc8 25.Re3 Rg6? 26.Nf5+ Bxf5 27.exf5 Rg5 28.f6+ Kxf6 29.Qxh6+ Rg6 30.Qxh7 Nd5 31.Rf3+ Nf4 32.Bxg6 fxg6 33.g3 Qb5 34.gxf4 exf4 35.Rxf4+ Kg5 36.Qh4++ 1-0]]

Critical error was 18. ...Nb6 chasing a pawn win and underestimating the dangers on my kingside, better seems to be either 18. ...b4 or 18. ...c4 which I'd both seen and was thinking of playing. Whoops! Still, in a rapidplay you don't get quite as much time to think things through, and the 15. ...Qa5 idea in particular seems OK.

25. ...Rg6 was trying to give up the exchange to relieve the pressure, though apparently simply 25. ...Qb5 keeps Black alive - but I was running out of time.

6 pawn moves at the start! Wouldn't recommend it to beginners (it all depends on the...)!
