Coming back to the Kasparov quote above. Since anyone who knows a bit of chess history knows that Capablanca is Cuban, Kasparov who's written masterful books about his "chess predecessors" certainly knows this too. So now I'm thinking that it's the translator of the quote that goofed. The original meaning of the quote was probably something like "born in the Americas", not born in America.

The alternative explanation is that the quote comes not from Gary Kasparov, but from his half-wit third cousin, Balthazar Kasparov, whose favorite hobby is shooting birds on telephone lines.

Magnus Carlsen World Champion 2013–present

Acknowledging that these days getting an advantage from the opening is well-nigh impossible; As everyone relies on top-notch computers for research, he tries to reach positions in which he is confident that he will outplay his opponents in the middle or endgame. - Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam

I believe Capablanca said that

Once again I rely on Edward Winter to find the truth.

https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/sources.html

He sights Irving Chernev's book 'The Bright Side of Chess' (A fun read, by the way.) as a possible source of confusion. And in fact, this is my source for this quote. (Now you know my secret.) And in the past, I once wrongly gave credit to Tarrasch for the quote, "First-class players lose to second-class players because second-class players sometimes play a first-class game." because of the way quotes were presented in this book. (Should you lose, you might see this "First-class" quote, now corrected and rightly credited to "Unknown".)

Edit: Perhaps I should credit "Dryden"? Or is "Unknown" closest to the truth?
