A good example Ock aside from I do not think you can 'prepare' for the lottery. 1,2,3,4,5 is as likely or unlikely as any other to win or be shared.

You are however choosing to participate which was my original response to your question. If you do not then again you are resigning yourself to the fact you will not win and chance will play no further part in that particular action.

It's an interesting point that you make.

Let's explore this idea further, by considering an event that the great majority of people would call good luck (although it's not always so!): winning the jackpot on a national lottery.

Firstly, you must buy a lottery ticket; otherwise you ain't gonna win! Then, you have to choose your numbers carefully. If you go for 1-2-3-4-5-6, or 1-3-5-7-9-11, you're going to be sharing that jackpot with a million other people. And then, you have to remember to check the numbers, and know how to go about claiming your prize.

But the central element is still luck - unless your numbers are randomly drawn, all your careful preparation will be useless!

Interesting topic and some humorous replies.

As a fairly new person to actually studying the game I am reminded of the old axiom whereby luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. In chess I believe this to be most appropriate.

[Quote from: "chessnut"]Welcome back. How are you felling?

Thanks for asking. Still quite a few health problems, including cognitive problems. I should challenge some of my old opponents. It would be a great opportunity for them to get revenge. 🤣

Did you manage "cognitive" by yourself or did you need someone to prompt you? 🙄

(Nice to hear you're getting back here / there.) 😊
