Prior to the match, I only played casual games once in awhile, and usually just with my younger brother (who was getting to the point to where he beat me regularly). The Fischer-Spassky match inspired me to start studying the game and to play in tournaments. Too bad Bobby went bonkers afterwards, but he sure did a lot to bring attention to the game at the time.
