Give chess goodie

I've been in Chessworld for pretty much 14 years and on most games I use 'play through'.
Mainly to keep track of the moves I've made but also to try out a next move and the possible response moves of my opponent.
Now, going by my rating, I've clearly not gained any advantage from this facility, but is it cheating?
When you see the great chess players sitting opposite each other over a chess board they don't say: "Hang on a minute, I just want to play through the moves."
Or do they?
I do believe that on occasions they take a break and disappear into a back room to discuss possible scenarios with their advisers.
So I ask, have I been cheating or consulting with my advisers?
