The Pawn move is a capital investment. Every one of the forty-eight should, from the beginning, be spent as if it were one of the last forty-eight apprehensive and responsible dollars between yourself and starvation.

"Could we look into the head of a chess player, we should see there a whole world of feelings, images, ideas, emotion and passion." -Alfred Binet*

*Alfred Binet (July 8, 1857 – October 18, 1911) was a French psychologist who invented the first practical IQ test, the Binet–Simon test. He also had done a series of experiments to see how well chess players played when blindfolded. He found that only some of the master chess players could play from memory and a few could play multiple games simultaneously without looking at the boards. To remember the positions of the pieces on the boards, some players envisioned exact replicas of specific chess sets, while others envisioned an abstract schema of the game. Binet concluded that extraordinary feats of memory such as blind chess playing could take a variety of mnemonic forms. He recounted his experiments in a book entitled 'Psychologie des grands calculateurs et joueurs en echec' (Psychology of great calculators and players in failure) published in 1894.

The world is not likely to tire of an amusement which never repeats itself, of a game which today presents features as novel and charms as fresh as those with which it delighted, in the morning of history, the dwellers on the banks of the Ganges and the Indus. -Willard Fiske*

*He helped organize the first American Chess Congress in 1857 and wrote the tournament book in 1859, and edited The Chess Monthly from 1857 to 1861 with Paul Morphy. His scholarly volume, Chess In Iceland and in Icelandic Literature (Florence, 1905), was used as source material by H. J. R. Murray for A History of Chess. Another manuscript, Chess Tales and Chess Miscellanies (New York, 1912), also published posthumously, is an anthology covering chess life of the period including articles about Morphy, problems by Sam Loyd, and the history of chess including some fables.

On further research on who said what quotes? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the famous champion of the underdog is attributed to saying "There's not the mystery in ten murders that there is in one game of chess." as accounted in the Margalit Fox book For the Defence.

Anyone interested:

"The quote has nothing to do with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but comes from the short story 'The Two Bottles of Relish' by Lord Dunsany." -Edward Winter

*Sorry for the duplication. I really enjoy reading Winter's books and online articles. If you haven't read him, I suggest checking his online stuff out.

Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path. Storms will not ask you to make changes, to learn, to grow or to make progress. Storms will DEMAND all of that of you and then some! Storms will change the game as you know it. Storms will get you out of that dysfunctional life that you’ve grown so comfortable with while simultaneously praying for relief from it. Storms will disrupt your pattern and it is then that you will HAVE to grow. You’ll either sink or swim depending on how you receive it.

An ancient writer said that if there were no flowers and moon and beautiful women, he would not want to be born into the world. I might add that there were no pen and ink and chess and wine, there was no purpose in being born a man. -Chang Chao
