British chess players would be at a disadvantage playing human chess. They seem reticent when it comes to tossing the Queen.

They used to have elevated observation platforms for the actual players to stand/sit on. Why not have the actual players be King on the board? As far as women players go, there is the variant known as "Cross-dress Chess." I think it originated in Soho...

Those Commies were / are always keen on chess but that scene seems to be more a tableau thought up by a mad emperor / tsar than an extreme socialist government.

In the former case of course, the various players could expect to be actually sacrificed and not just moved to the side of the "board". :-co

In 1924, St. Petersburg was called Leningrad, unless it was before Jan. 26, when it was known as Petrograd.

Wow, what an amazing picture!

I'll bet one of those 'knights' could gallop across the board and take out the opposing 'king' in a few seconds, with the element of surprise on their side!

(P.S. By 'take out' I mean knock to the ground, not causing any lasting physical damage!)
