Good question. by explaining his thinking he had given away his strategy. Another thing he was upset about or now that I think about it, the whole reason he was upset.

The best advice I was ever given as an Art Teacher was to ask 'Why' that color? etc IE chess move? I think it applies here also. Actually, I was working with a functional autistic in my chess club. He had made a seemingly bad move and some of the other kids was trying to help him. He was getting upset. Once I asked him 'why'? that move, he explained in detail several moves forward why he thought it was a good idea. We were all amazed at how plausible his move would have been.

Thanks,

I was really more interrested in stirring up conversation than actually finding the quote.

Have you considered asking Mr.Heisman or looking up his material(Novice Nook among others)? Good luck

I'm looking for a quote I read about how the advice a teacher might give would change by rating. I thought it was by Dan Heisman, but I haven't been able to find it.

The idea of the quote goes something like this:

Suppose I observe two players play the following moves: [[ 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 ]]
- If the Black player is rated 800, I might say "Good, you are developing a piece off the back rank."
- If the Black player is rated 1300, I might say "Be careful about blocking your c-pawn with the knight. In queen pawn games, ...c5 is often an important pawn break needed to open files for the rooks."
- If the Black player is rated 1800, I might say "Have you been having success with the Chigorin Defense?"

Does anybody know where I might find this quote?
