it is likely a query that they can run any time they want - i can't imagine my knowing adds any value to my experience however

Yes apologies agreed. Active membership is really not relevant to anyone outside of the webmaster and his team. As was highlighted by the replies we get a wide and varied choice of opponents, continual influx of new members, and a much greater choice of time limits and formats than other sites.

That really is all that matters.

This topic seems potentially a little commercially sensitive. We try and get new active members each day through our various efforts, but perhaps it is best not to make public the full activity of the site, for commercially sensitive reasons.

Please could we stick to general chess topics. This seems a bit too site sensitive. But I would say we make efforts continually to ensure a good variety of opponents.

Cheers, K

My logic is likely flawed here but I do not think maybe more than around 6500 fully active members. My reasoning is that the majority of members will play in tournaments of some description, and that again the majority will have won at least one tournament at some point.

So if you go to the norms page you can see that there are currently 5,901 members who fall into this criteria. Add 10% for a reasonable guess at those who do not and I think the above would not be too far out.

pure superposition and quite possibly way off 😊

Tempted to say we get "important information" like the number of times we have logged on, but that would be unkind. But there you go, I have said it. Anyway, when this has come up in the past the powers that be have said that such information is commercial in confidence.

I'm not sure how many players there are, I've been a member for over 10 years, and still meet new players, whilst others have gone. Of course there are "active" and "non-active" players, and among those "active" there are more or less frequent players. To get an idea of how much game activity there is, you can take the Game Numbers between your most recent and oldest games - I have a game I started on Aug.11th (10712271) and one that started this week (10767590) - so that's a difference of 55,000 games that others have started in the intervening time. 55,000 games over 2 months is about 27,500 games a month. I don't think the site is as busy now as it was when I joined in 2006, but there's a lot more competition, so all things considered I think it's still quite a popular site.

If it helps so far I have completed games against 99 different individuals, which is far more than the average OTB club membership in this part of the world.

I am sure a clever programmer could write code to crawl the site for a week capturing the names logged on in the last hour, 24 times a day. Accumulate, Sort, drop duplicates and there you go. I wouldn't look for an official answer though.
