Had a fun game with an unsound opening against a lower rated player (wouldn't risk it against my grade) last night
E Stamp 123 vs Steve Crow 157

Made bottom board for our club in the county cup comp.
Felt I needed to play for win to help team, so I tried to play a bit more open than usual.

Another Russian system in Gruenfeld.
Theory seems to not rate 9.Be3 saying 11..Nd4 better.
I need to decide what to do vs 7..Nc6 with 4.Qb3 move order.

I was sure I'd seen gxf3 as opposed to Bxf3 but decided for myself that if Bxf3 then a later ..f5 might undermine the pawn centre. I went for gxf3 to strengthen centre and hopefully be able to play more aggressively.

me (172) vs opponent (150)
[[1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Qb3 dxc4 5.Qxc4 Bg7 6.e4 0-0 7.Be2 Nc6 8.Nf3 Bg4 9.Be3 Bxf3 10.gxf3 e5 11.d5 Ne7 12.f4 exf4 13.Bxf4 Ne8 14.Rd1 Nd6 15.Qd3 Qd7 16.0-0 a6 17.a3 b5 18.Bg3 Nc4 19.Qc2 Ne5 20.f4 Ng4 21.Qd3 Nc8 22.Qf3 f5 23.e5 Qe7 24.d6 Nxd6 25.exd6 cxd6 26.Qd5+ Kh8 27.Bxg4 fxg4 28.Rfe1 Qa7+ 29.Kg2]] resigns 1-0

Cool cartoon...funny.

Were you confident of your chances minus the 2 pawns our were you dicing it a bit?

I thought it was very dangerous to have the accelerated double rook battery for the two pawns, especially on the relatively quick time control the league uses - 30 in 1 1/4 hours then 15 for rest of moves. But on engine post mortem he very nearly seemed to have the perfect defence plan - i.e.

Kh1 Bf3-g4

Except he just used:

Kh1 Bf3 and then the disaster move Ne2

That your grade will be the same next year 😊

And that you are a drawish player.

Ps: our rival team for the league lost last night - so we've retained our title! (Our 4-0 on Tuesday wasn't for nothing).
