Deleting individual cookies. For security reasons, Microsoft now identifies cookies with encrypted filenames, for example, FHODYSOB.txt. This means that it is less easy to identify individual cookies, unless they are visible by inspecting the Temporary Internet Files folder via Tools ... Internet Options ... General ... Browsing history and then clicking Settings , followed by View Files . This process gives access to a limited subset of the cookies held on your computer but does not normally contain any cookies stored by ChessWorld. To locate and delete any ChessWorld cookies use the following procedure.
The pathname to the relevant folder is usually
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies
Using Windows Explorer, find the folder labelled with the user name that you use on your computer. (Do not confuse this with your ChessWorld user name!). Click to expand this folder and look for the AppData folder. Expand this folder and locate and expand the Roaming folder. Scroll down to locate and expand the Microsoft folder and then scroll down to locate and expand the Windows folder. At this stage you should see a folder labelled Cookies at the top of the list in the left hand pane and a list of encrypted cookie titles in the right hand pane.
Click on the Cookies folder and then enter the required search term in the Search box at the top right of the Windows Explorer window. The right hand pane will clear and show No items match your search followed by a link to Advanced Search. Click on this link and, in the new window that appears, make sure that you check the Include non-indexed, hidden and system files option. At this point any cookies that contain your search term will be listed in the right hand pane.
You can right-click on any of the cookies listed and select Open. The file will be shown in your default text editor, (normally Notepad), and allow you to read the contents. If you wish to delete the cookie simply right-click and select the Delete option.
Job done!
This procedure will allow you to selectively delete any ChessWorld cookie without removing any other cookies held on your computer.
If you use third party file management software you may find that this procdure can be signicantly simplified!
