Writing moves sounds scary β but tournament notation is mostly just:
piece letter + destination square.
After a few games it becomes automatic.

β
The Core Notation You Need
- Pawn move: e4, d5
- Piece move: Nf3, Bb5, Qd2, Re1
- Capture: Nxe5, Bxf7
- Check: add + (e.g., Qh7+)
- Checkmate: add # (e.g., Qh7#)
- Castling: O-O (king side), O-O-O (queen side)
π― Two Quick Clarity Tips
- If two identical pieces can go to the same square, notation adds a hint (file or rank).
- Donβt overthink perfect symbols β be consistent and readable.
β± What If Iβm Low on Time?
Many events allow stopping notation when very low on time (rules vary).
The key is: stay calm, keep playing legal moves, donβt freeze.
