Removing the Defender: Undermining the Defense

Removing the Defender (also called Elimination of the Guard or Undermining) is a tactic used to destroy the opponent's coordination. When a piece performs a vital defensive task—like guarding a piece, a mate threat, or a key square—you remove it (usually by capture) to leave the target defenseless.

Removing the Defender Examples

Removing the defender is a tactical idea where a key guarding piece is eliminated, deflected, or forced away, causing the entire position to collapse. Once the defender disappears, threats that were previously impossible suddenly work. The examples below show the most common ways defenders are removed and how this leads directly to winning material or checkmate.
