Online Chess Conditional Moves (If-Then) FAQ

The Conditional Moves feature lets you pre-enter replies to anticipated moves, saving time and keeping the game flowing. This page answers the most common questions about using Conditional (If-Then) moves on ChessWorld.net.

Q. What are Conditional moves?

Conditional (If-Then) moves let you enter replies in advance, anticipating your opponent’s most likely responses. For example, after playing Nxp, you can prepare an automatic reply if your opponent recaptures.

Q. How do I create Conditional moves?

To configure:

  • Enable the Tabbed style interface via My Stuff ... My Interface.
  • Set the number of rows (up to 5) via My Stuff ... My Moves.
  • Uncheck I do NOT want to receive or send conditional moves.

After making your move, use the Conditionals tab, click the board, and enter anticipated moves. They will auto-trigger if the opponent plays the expected reply.

Q. What does each Conditional row represent?

Each row is a different variation. Example: after 1.e4, you might prepare:

  • c5 Nf3 (row one, anticipating Sicilian)
  • c6 d4 (row two, anticipating Caro-Kann)
Q. How will I know if my opponent submitted a Conditional move?

The board auto-refreshes and shows a message like: Your move has triggered the following conditional reply from your opponent: b8c6.

Q. Can my opponent see my Conditional plans?

No. Your opponent only knows if a move was triggered. Otherwise, your rows are private.

Q. How can I disable Conditional moves?

Visit My Stuff ... My Moves and check I do NOT want to receive or send conditional moves. Both players must have the option enabled for conditionals to work.

Q. Can I stop using conditionals mid-game?

Yes. Simply change the setting in My Moves. Your opponent will no longer see Conditional rows, and play continues normally.

Q. Can I enter moves that checkmate my opponent?

You can enter a sequence up to the checkmating move. The final move itself must be played manually.

Q. Why doesn’t the Conditional Moves feature work for me?

It should work in all modern browsers. If you’ve changed settings or use popup blockers, adjust your configuration. If issues persist after following setup steps, contact the HelpDesk.
