Online Chess Teams FAQs

Although chess is a two-player game, ChessWorld.net makes it possible to play as part of a team. Teams create leagues, foster community, and add a collaborative dimension to online play. Below are answers to the most common questions about teams, captains, substitutions, and leagues.

👥 ChessWorld Teams

Q. What are Teams?

Teams allow players to participate in leagues, much like real-life chess clubs. Teams are based on shared interests or affinities and compete against other teams in structured divisions.

Q. Why play in a Team?

Teams create camaraderie and provide the chance to play against likeminded players worldwide. Captains recruit players, assign boards, and lead their team to win titles.

Q. How does a Captain decide board order?

Typically, stronger players are placed on higher boards. A rating of 0 means available for pairing; 90 indicates Reserve.

Q. How does a Captain change board order?

On the Team homepage, captains assign board numbers using input boxes next to player names, then click Adjust board order.

Q. How does a Captain recruit players?
  • Use Join Games ... Search by Interest.
  • Use the promotion link on the Team homepage to post in forums.
  • Ask league promoters to announce vacancies.
  • Invite opponents or friends directly.
  • Appoint co-captains to share duties.
Q. Are substitutions allowed?

Yes. After 5 days of inactivity, a Captain can replace a player with another, provided the inactive player has made no more than 20 full moves across all league games.

Q. Why do players get a status of 90?

This status is automatically applied if a player hasn’t logged in for 35+ days, marking them as Reserve/non-playing.

Q. How many strong players can a Team have?

Each Team may have only one active member rated above 2500 at the start of play (except in the Champions League and Huge Teams League).

Q. What are the different board orders?

League Division board orders determine pairings in official matches. Friendly team challenges use “Team challenge” and “Team accept” board orders. Pairing logic ensures mismatched team sizes are handled fairly.

Q. Can I join more than one Team?

Yes, as long as the teams are in different leagues.

Q. Can I captain more than one Team?

Yes, but captaining multiple teams is demanding. A maximum of 10 Teams is allowed, except in the Huge Teams League.

Q. How can I leave a Team?

If active, ask the Captain to substitute you. If waiting for the next Division, use the I wish to leave this team link. You may also opt to stay as Reserve.

Q. When does a League division start?

When five Teams each have seven players and Captains have set board orders. Admins may then create the division.

Q. Can matches be played before divisions start?

Yes, Captains can issue friendly challenges by setting board orders and using the Friendly Team Challenge option.

Q. How many players can be in a Team?

Teams can have up to 10 players (7 active, 3 reserves). For larger groups, join the Huge Teams League.
