How to use the Chess Checkmate Trainer
Choose a difficulty, then select a piece and its destination on the board. Find the first move of the mating combination. After a correct move, the trainer plays the reply recorded in the source game, and you continue the combination until checkmate.
Use Hint if you get stuck or Show Solution to see the complete course line. Incorrect moves never change the position. You can move through new puzzles without registering.
Train checkmate patterns with real games
These puzzles come from the Art of Checkmate course PGNs and preserve their original numeric difficulty levels. The levels are not the number of moves to mate. You may encounter queen sacrifices, back-rank mates, knight forks, deflections and longer mating nets even in easier collections.
Important: The trainer checks the legal moves in each source continuation and accepts an immediate alternative checkmate, but it does not claim the recorded continuation is the only winning line against every possible defence. The defending side plays the documented game response.
A practical checkmate training routine
- Look for forcing moves, especially checks and sacrifices that remove a defender.
- Calculate the opponent's reply before moving your first piece.
- Finish the entire mating sequence rather than stopping after the first check.
- Repeat combinations that required hints, then try a higher difficulty.

Checkmate trainer frequently asked questions
Is the Chess Checkmate Trainer free?
Yes. You can practise all the verified puzzles directly in your web browser without registering or installing anything.
Are Level 1 puzzles always mate in one?
No. The difficulty numbers come from the original Art of Checkmate PGN collections. They indicate course difficulty, not the number of moves to mate.
How do I move the pieces?
Click or tap your piece, then choose a highlighted legal destination square. When a pawn promotes, choose the new piece from the promotion options.
Why does the opponent reply automatically?
The trainer follows the documented game continuation. That lets you practise the complete mating sequence, but other legal defensive variations may exist.
What if another move also checkmates?
The trainer recognises an immediate legal checkmate even if it differs from the source line. For other alternatives, it asks you to find the annotated course continuation.
How can checkmate exercises improve my chess?
They help you practise forcing-move calculation, recognising weak king positions, removing defenders and finishing combinations accurately.
Can beginners use this checkmate trainer?
Yes. Start with Level 1, use hints when needed and concentrate on understanding why each move works.
Where do the positions come from?
They are prevalidated continuations extracted from the Art of Checkmate PGN collections. Ambiguous or unverified entries were excluded from this initial release.
