How to practise openings

Choose the colour you want to play, then select an opening. Click a piece and its destination to play your move. The trainer automatically plays the opponent's next move in the selected variation. With Practise as Black, the board rotates so your pieces are at the bottom and White makes the first move automatically.

If you get stuck, use Hint for the strategic idea, the piece to move and then the move itself. Select Show Model Line to read the illustrative continuation.

White openings, Black defences, gambits and systems

White openings include the Italian Game, Ruy Lopez, Queen's Gambit, London System and more. Black defences include the Sicilian, Caro-Kann, French, King's Indian Defence and others. Gambits offer material to seek activity or initiative, while system openings emphasise repeatable development plans rather than one fixed move order.

Important: These are short, curated training variations, not exhaustive repertoires or claims that every move is uniquely best. Other legal opening moves can be perfectly sound. The trainer asks you to reproduce one instructive continuation and explains the underlying plan.

Opening trainer FAQs

Can I practise openings as Black?

Yes. Choose Black under Practise as. The board rotates, the trainer plays White's first move and you practise Black's replies.

What is the difference between a gambit and a system opening?

A gambit deliberately offers material for activity or other compensation. A system opening usually follows a recognisable piece setup and strategic plan across several possible opponent move orders.

Are the opening moves the only good moves?

No. The trainer follows a selected illustrative line to practise memory and ideas. Other moves may also be strong and playable.

Is this Chess Opening Trainer free?

Yes. You can practise all the opening lines in your browser without registering or installing software.
