Capablanca Endgame Trainer: Chess Fundamentals
Explore 39 instructive endgame examples from José Raúl Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals. Play through guided continuations or move the pieces freely in study diagrams. Learn pawn endings, opposition, minor-piece technique and rook endings.
How to use the Capablanca Endgame Trainer
Choose an example from the book. In guided continuations, make the highlighted legal moves while the trainer plays the illustrative response, with three optional hint levels. In study diagrams, you can explore legal moves for either side without being told that only one move is correct. Restart returns to the source position.
Teaching mode: These are instructional examples, not engine-versus-engine puzzles. Guided lines illustrate a selected continuation; some are shortened or curated rather than full verbatim book analysis. Other examples are book diagrams provided for free move exploration. The trainer does not certify the outcome of every alternative or claim that a model move is unique.
What can you learn?
- Basic mates: how a rook, a queen, or two bishops cooperate with the king.
- Pawn promotion: why the king often needs to lead a passed pawn.
- Opposition: how to defend and attack king-and-pawn positions.
- Pawn majorities: when to advance a pawn and when to improve the king first.
- Defensive technique: how a single pawn can hold up two.

This expanded edition has 39 examples: 25 guided legal continuations and 14 interactive study diagrams. Original book example numbers are retained (including Examples 24a and 24b as two sides to move). Starting positions and guided moves have been checked for chess legality. Some lessons deliberately use only short extracts from the original book. Explanations are modern short summaries, not verbatim historical annotations.
Read the public-domain original at Project Gutenberg. A community project also maintains digitised studies. This trainer does not need to fetch either source during play.

Capablanca endgame trainer FAQs
Is this chess endgame trainer free?
Yes. The lessons run in a browser without registration or installation.
Does the trainer accept every winning move?
No. Guided lessons follow one illustrative line; other sound moves can exist. Study diagrams allow any legal moves without claiming a unique winning line.
What are the best endgames for beginners?
Start with king-and-rook checkmate, king-and-queen checkmate, and king-and-pawn positions. These lessons teach king activity, the opposition, and pawn promotion.
Do the lessons come from real chess games?
The selected positions are numbered teaching examples from Capablanca's book. Some are composed instructional diagrams rather than positions from recorded tournament games.
