Lolli's Mate FAQ
These answers use the strict queen-and-supporting-pawn definition.
Strict definition
What is Lolli's Mate in the strict sense?
Lolli's Mate is a queen-and-supporting-pawn mating pattern where the queen lands on g7, g2, b7 or b2 and the pawn/cage removes the king's escape. The key is that the queen is not acting alone; an advanced pawn or locked structure supplies the mate geometry. Start with the Blackburne Qg7# trainer card and identify the supporting pawn before revealing the answer.
Which final queen squares count on this strict page?
This strict page uses Qg7#, Qg2#, Qb7# and Qb2# as the clean Lolli conclusions. Those squares show the queen entering beside the king while the pawn/cage seals the escape route. Use the Strict Lolli Trainer Cards section to practise only those conclusions.
Does Lolli's Mate require a supporting pawn?
Yes, for this strict treatment a supporting advanced pawn or equivalent pawn cage is required. Without that support, the position may be a queen mate but not the classic Lolli pattern. Reveal each card and name the supporting pawn/cage before replaying the solution.
Is a rook mate a Lolli's Mate?
No, a rook mate is not a strict Lolli's Mate. Rook corridor mates can be useful related patterns, but they should not be trained on a strict Lolli page. Use the Replay Lab here only for queen conclusions on g7, g2, b7 or b2.
Why remove the old Type B rook examples?
The old Type B examples are useful checkmate studies, but they weaken the strict definition because they do not finish with the queen-and-supporting-pawn Lolli picture. A stricter page is more trustworthy for players searching the named pattern. Use the excluded examples later on a broader queen-cage or corridor-mate page.
Can Qb7# or Qb2# be Lolli's Mate too?
Yes, Qb7# and Qb2# can be treated as mirrored Lolli-style queen-and-pawn conclusions when the supporting pawn/cage does the same escape-square job. The destination changes, but the queen plus supporting pawn geometry remains the test. Add future Qb7# or Qb2# games to this same strict trainer group.
Training the pattern
How should I solve a Lolli's Mate card?
First identify the queen's landing square, then identify the pawn or cage that stops the king escaping. Only after that should you calculate checks and captures. Use Practice from here on a card, then Reveal answer to compare your escape-square count.
Why does the queen often mate on g7 or g2?
The g7 and g2 squares sit next to common castled-king shelters and often become weak after a fianchetto or h-file sacrifice. An advanced pawn can remove the king's flight square while the queen lands with mate. Use the Blackburne and Laiz cards to compare Qg7# and Qg2#.
What should I calculate before sacrificing for Lolli's Mate?
Calculate whether the queen can reach the target square, whether the supporting pawn or cage prevents escape, and whether the defender can capture the queen. The sacrifice is only sound if those three checks all work. Use Replay solution after each card to confirm the forcing route.
Can Lolli's Mate appear as a threat before mate?
Yes, some games reach a decisive Lolli threat before the final mate is played. On this strict page, threat examples are included only when the continuation ends in Qg7#, Qg2#, Qb7# or Qb2# with pawn support. Use the Kushnir continuation card to see a threat convert into Qg7#.
Why are the cards no-spoiler?
The cards are no-spoiler so the final queen move is not visible before you calculate. Lolli's Mate is pattern training, and the key skill is spotting the pawn-supported queen entry for yourself. Use Reveal answer only after naming the queen square and the support square.
What does Practice from here do?
Practice from here opens the exact pre-resource FEN in the ChessWorld practice board. The side to move is read from the FEN, so the button always gives the correct player to move. Use it before Replay solution if you want to test the move yourself.
What does Replay solution do?
Replay solution loads a short FEN-based replay from the critical position. It shows the exact route to Qg7#, Qg2#, Qb7# or Qb2# rather than replaying unrelated earlier moves. Use it after Reveal answer to check the calculation.
What does Watch full game do?
Watch full game loads the cleaned supplied PGN for the complete model game. It shows how the supporting pawn, weakened king and queen entry were prepared. Use it after solving a card to understand the buildup.
Comparisons and exclusions
Is every Qg7# a Lolli's Mate?
No, Qg7# alone is not enough. The mate must also have supporting pawn or cage geometry that removes the king's escape. Use the card answers to confirm the support instead of relying only on the final square.
Is every Qg2# a Lolli's Mate?
No, Qg2# must also be supported by the advanced pawn or cage idea. A queen can mate on g2 for many reasons, but strict Lolli requires the pawn-supported boxed king. Use the Laiz trainer card as the clean Black-side model.
Is Lolli's Mate the same as Greco's Mate?
No, Greco's Mate is usually a diagonal queen-and-bishop or queen-and-piece mate near the castled king. Lolli's Mate is stricter here because it requires the queen landing square and supporting pawn/cage. Use the Strict Definition section before comparing named mates.
Is Lolli's Mate the same as Arabian Mate?
No, Arabian Mate is a rook-and-knight pattern. Lolli's Mate is a queen-and-supporting-pawn pattern with conclusions such as Qg7# or Qg2#. Use the Lolli cards here and the Arabian trainer separately.
Should related rook corridor mates stay on this page?
No, not on the strict Lolli page. They should be moved to a corridor mate, rook mate, or related checkmate-pattern page. Use this page for strict queen-and-pawn conclusions only.
Page use
Where should beginners start?
Beginners should start with the Blackburne Qg7# card because it shows the clean queen-and-pawn pattern. Then they should try the Laiz Qg2# card to see the same idea from Black's side. Use the Adviser to choose one of those two routes.
How many strict trainer cards are included?
This stricter version includes only the supplied examples that meet the Qg7# or Qg2# conclusion rule, plus a continuation that reaches Qg7#. It deliberately excludes rook mates and loose queen-cage examples. Use future Qb7# or Qb2# examples to expand the same strict set.
How should I add future examples?
Add only games or continuations where the final queen move is Qg7#, Qg2#, Qb7# or Qb2# and a supporting advanced pawn or cage is visible. Then derive the FEN before the forcing resource and keep the visible card no-spoiler. Use the same Practice from here, Reveal answer and Replay solution buttons for consistency.
