En Passant Chess Rule

En passant is a special pawn capture available for one move only. When an enemy pawn advances two squares from its starting rank and lands beside your pawn, your pawn may capture diagonally onto the square it passed over. The resulting position must still leave your king safe.

The En Passant Pattern

White captures en passant

After ...d7-d5, White may play exd6 en passant. The white pawn lands on d6 and the black pawn on d5 disappears.

Black captures en passant

After e2-e4, Black may play dxe3 en passant. The black pawn lands on e3 and the white pawn on e4 disappears.

Arrow key: the standard red arrow shows the immediately preceding move and, after an answer, the proposed en passant reply. The four requirements are a two-square move, an adjacent enemy pawn, an immediate reply, and a resulting position in which your king is safe.

En Passant FAQs

Definition and purpose

What is en passant in chess?

En passant is a special pawn capture available immediately after an adjacent enemy pawn advances two squares from its starting rank. The capturing pawn moves diagonally to the square the enemy pawn passed over.

What does en passant mean?

En passant is French for in passing. The name describes capturing the pawn as though it had advanced only one square.

How does en passant work?

A pawn on its fifth rank may capture an adjacent enemy pawn that has just moved two squares. The capturing pawn moves diagonally one square and the enemy pawn is removed from the square beside it.

Is en passant a legal chess move?

Yes. It is an official pawn rule, not an optional convention or online-only feature.

Is en passant forced?

No. The player may choose another legal move, but the en passant opportunity then disappears.

Why does en passant exist?

It prevents a pawn from using its initial two-square move to bypass an enemy pawn's normal one-square capture opportunity.

Which pieces can capture en passant?

Only pawns can capture en passant.

Can both White and Black capture en passant?

Yes. White captures onto its sixth rank and Black captures onto its third rank.

Pawn position and destination

When can White capture en passant?

A white pawn on its fifth rank may capture an adjacent black pawn immediately after that pawn moves two squares from rank seven to rank five.

When can Black capture en passant?

A black pawn on its fourth rank may capture an adjacent white pawn immediately after that pawn moves two squares from rank two to rank four.

Where does the capturing pawn land?

It lands on the empty square the two-step pawn passed over, one rank forward and one file diagonally from the capturing pawn.

Which pawn is removed in en passant?

The pawn that just advanced two squares is removed from its destination square beside the capturing pawn.

Why does en passant capture onto an empty square?

The rule treats the two-square advance as though the pawn had stopped on the passed-over square, allowing the adjacent pawn to capture it there.

Can a pawn capture en passant from any rank?

No. White's capturing pawn must be on rank five, while Black's capturing pawn must be on rank four.

Must the pawns be next to each other?

Yes. They must occupy adjacent files on the same rank after the two-square pawn move.

Can a pawn capture two files away en passant?

No. A pawn always captures only one file diagonally.

Timing and common mistakes

How long is en passant available?

Only for the move immediately following the enemy pawn's two-square advance.

Can you wait one move before capturing en passant?

No. If either player makes another move, that particular en passant right is lost.

Can you capture en passant after the pawn moved one square?

No. En passant requires the adjacent pawn to have just made its initial two-square move. A normal diagonal capture may still be possible if the pawn occupies the destination square.

Can you capture en passant if you missed the chance?

No. The opportunity is never restored unless a different pawn later creates a new en passant opportunity.

Can two pawns capture the same pawn en passant?

Yes. If the two-step pawn lands between two eligible enemy pawns, either one may capture it en passant on the next move.

Can en passant capture a pawn that was already on the fifth rank?

No. The captured pawn must have arrived beside the capturing pawn by moving two squares on the immediately preceding move.

Can you decline en passant?

Yes. It is a choice, although playing another move permanently gives up that opportunity.

Is a one-square diagonal pawn capture en passant?

Not when the captured piece occupies the destination square. That is an ordinary pawn capture.

Check, pins and king safety

Can you capture en passant while in check?

Yes, if the capture removes the check and leaves your king safe.

Can en passant expose your own king?

Yes, because two pawns leave their original squares during the capture. If that opens an attack on your king, the move is illegal.

Can a pinned pawn capture en passant?

Only if the resulting position leaves its king safe. A pawn absolutely pinned on a file or diagonal often cannot make the capture.

Can en passant block a check?

It can resolve check by removing the checking pawn or by placing the capturing pawn on a line, provided the final king position is safe.

Can en passant give check?

Yes. The capturing pawn may check directly or the removal of the captured pawn may uncover a rook, bishop or queen attack.

Can en passant give discovered check?

Yes. Removing the adjacent pawn can open a rank or diagonal that checks the enemy king.

Can en passant give checkmate?

Yes. Although rare, a legal en passant capture can open a checking line and leave the enemy king with no defence.

Can en passant be illegal because the destination is attacked?

A pawn may move onto an attacked square. It becomes illegal only when the move leaves its own king in check.

Notation and practical play

Does en passant affect stalemate?

Yes. If an en passant capture is legally available, the player has a legal move and the position is not stalemate.

Does en passant reset the 50-move count?

Yes. It is a pawn move and a capture, so the half-move count resets.

How is en passant written in notation?

It is written like a normal pawn capture, such as exd6 or dxe3. The optional e.p. suffix may be added but is not required.

Do you announce en passant?

No announcement is required under standard chess rules. You simply make the legal capture.

Why will an online board not allow en passant?

The opportunity may have expired, the pawn may not be adjacent, the previous move may have been one square, or the capture may expose your king.

Do chess engines understand en passant?

Yes. Legal move generators track the passed-over square for the single reply on which en passant is available.

What is the fastest en passant checklist?

Check that the enemy pawn just moved two squares, landed beside your pawn, your pawn is on its fifth rank, and the capture leaves your king safe.

What is the best way to practise en passant?

Compare nearly identical positions where the previous move, pin or check changes the answer, then calculate the full board after both pawns leave their squares.
